Man falls to death in helicopter winch rescue in Victoria
THREE of five Victorian rescue helicopters have been cleared to return to service after a man fell 30m to his death while being airlifted for a broken ankle.
The man was injured while bushwalking at Macs Cover, north of Melbourne, about 10.30am on Saturday.
Due to the difficulty in retrieving the man, he was to be airlifted to hospital.
The Age reported the man fell from the helicopter as he reached the door.
Ambulance Victoria chief executive Greg Sassella said there had been no malfunction with the winch.
Winching operations will now be investigated by charter company Australian Helicopters and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.
