F-111 finds new home at Queensland Air Museum in Caloundra
QUEENSLAND Air Museum was abuzz today as a dream for aviation buffs was realised with the arrival of an F-111 fighter jet.
The plane's presence served as a glorious conclusion to the museum's seven year quest to claim one of the six prized F-111's available to civilian museums.
Air museum president Cameron Elmes was ecstatic as the museum's pride and joy was being lowered into place by crane today.
"It'll most definitely be the centrepiece, it's going into hangar number one, our main hangar."
The Minister for Defense Materiel Jason Clare said last year, "loaning these mighty planes to Australian air museums and historical organisations will help preserve this important part of our military heritage."
The museum located, next to Caloundra airport, will hold an open cockpit weekend to welcome the F-111 on June 29-30. Everyone is welcome to attend.
The F-111 will be on display from this weekend.
