Fever clinic opens at Bundy Hospital

A FEVER clinic has been established at Bundaberg Hospital due to demands for COVID-19 testing in the region.

Having opened on Monday afternoon, the clinic will be open daily from 11am-7.30pm, including weekends, until further notice.

Outside those times, presentations will be made to the emergency department as usual.

A spokesperson said Queensland Health had strategies and plans in place to ensure it was well prepared to deal with the virus, which began in China.

"The community can rest assured that all necessary work is going on to best prepare us if novel coronavirus becomes a pandemic," the spokesperson said.

"Fever clinics are just one example of this.

"These clinics are designed to help manage community needs and separate potential cases of COVID 19 from the general waiting room of the Emergency Department.

"COVID-19 cases and patients needing testing are managed by the Hospital and Health Services."

The spokesperson said that, at this stage, Bundaberg residents should not be alarmed about novel coronavirus but rather aware and informed.

"Our experienced team of experts have responded well to health emergencies in the past, and we will do it again," the spokesperson said.

"If you have been overseas in the last 14 days and feel unwell please call 13HEALTH, your GP or local hospital to arrange an assessment.

"Calling ahead to the GP surgery or hospital to let them know your symptoms and travel history helps them prepare for your arrival."

Hervey Bay Hospital's fever clinic was opened yesterday and Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service rural facilities have local plans in place.

Nurses will be stationed just inside emergency department entrances to pre-triage patients and direct them straight to clinics as necessary.

To date there has only one case of a Wide Bay resident with coronavirus, a 38-year-old woman from the Gympie region who was transferred to an isolation room in the Sunshine Coast University Hospital last week. She had recently travelled from London through Dubai.

Anyone with concerns can call 13 HEALTH.
