A MAKESHIFT memorial stands mute witness to the scene of a tragedy near Gatton.

Two families are now in mourning after two young lives were taken in a moment in a head-on collision between two driver-only vehicles on Friday afternoon.

A stone monument with flowers was erected within 24 hours of the incident.

The accident happened on a bend on the road where the speed limit is 100kph.

The accident happened around 2pm on a bend on the Gatton-Laidley Rd a kilometre east of the UQ Gatton entrance at College View.

Conditions were clear at the time. Queensland Ambulance Service said the man and the woman died at scene.

Queensland Police have not yet released the names of the dead but a 24-year-old man and a woman believed to be in her 20's were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact Crime Stoppers or their local police.

In an awful irony, the day was "Fatality Free Friday", Australia's only national community based road safety program.
